Physical Education

Intent:

At The Pathfinder C of E Primary School we aim to develop a fun, high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel individual’s abilities in competitive sports and other physically-demanding activities. We provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Our children will have opportunities to compete in sport and other activities that build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. PE at The Pathfinder is an imperative element of the curriculum, which develops a need for healthy life styles, a balanced diet, positive growth mind-set and the development of resilience. We are passionate about teaching children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.

Our GetSet4PE curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils:

- Have opportunities to experience and compete in a range of different sports.

- Receive at least 2 hours of physical exercise a week.

- Are leading healthy and active lifestyles.

- Develop values and transferrable life skills such as fairness and respect.

Implementation:

PE at The Pathfinder is taught by a combination of class teachers and a PE specialist. Children have equal opportunities to take part in a range of sports and physical activities within a supportive environment where effort as well as success is recognised. Children are encouraged to participate in exercise through-out the day during PE lessons, clubs, the Daily Mile initiative and outdoor learning. The school also benefits from a focus during lunch provision and special events.

Impact:

Our PE curriculum is high quality, well thought-out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

-Analysis of spending of PE and Sport Premium

-Photo and video evidence of the children’s practical learning (where relevant)

-Learning walks and reflective staff feedback (teacher voice);

-Pupil participation in competitions and clubs

The Pathfinder also took part in ‘The School Games Mark’ which is a government-led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Participating in this process allows schools to evaluate their PE provision and assists them in developing an action plan for future progress.

Last academic year, The Pathfinder achieved the Bronze Award.

We want to motivate children to utilise these underpinning skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives and undertake new life experiences now and in the future.
